My takeaways from leading WTL4 in a TV studio environement
1. Plenty of bandwidth means reserve to do extra cool things.
2. If you are proud of your stuff, go big or go home… unsung hero of the event: a 9 by 16 foot screen. It takes guts to put your stuff up in billboard size.
3. It feels good to take a stand for an independent-thinking environment where everyone chooses their own lodging, actively creates dinner plans and thinks for themselves as part of the lead-up to the event- as opposed to a sheltered everybody do the same thing hotel environment. (though the latter is of course lovely too!)
4. The dark studio requires some light. Long days in full black drape is too much. Thank you Gia Combs-Ramirez for that timely energy read on Day 1.
5. Happy tech team members make for happy everything.
6. All the lights camera action do NOT mean losing oneself. In a crowd of the right people, our people, YOUR people, you can be more present than ever.
7. The just-right size of the event is now officially a signature. I love knowing everybody’s name by the afternoon of day 1. You can run but you can’t hide (okay that’s not so much to do with the studio, but still.)
8. Did I say tons of bandwidth rocks?
9. The green room, with separate makeup and dressing room, was a really nice touch.
10. Great, variegated, mood lighting, including gobos, made for a really lovely environment.
What worked or didn’t work for you at the CBC studio? Would you do something innovative with your next workshop venue?
Worth it!
